Fringe Mormonism

Fred Voros is to mainstream Mormonism what Andrew Sullivan or Mark Helprin is to Conservatism, only less popular. Namely, a fringe player who thrives on liberal dissent from a strongly conservative base.

Over the weekend Voros published a plea for Mormons to vote Democratic.

Some have taken this to mean that the Mormon vote is in jeopardy of losing it's Republican majority. It just ain't so. (quick note: the page for the linked blog with the Voros article is the Student Democratic Party of BYU - Idaho, not the BYU in Provo, UT)

I'll address the substance of his remarks later today. But let's study the source.

Like any great movement, Mormonism has its internal dissenters. These dissenters have their own agenda, publications and players... which is all fine and good. I welcome it.

But let's not confuse liberal agenda fringe players with the vast majority of American Mormons who are decidedly conservative. There are four main publications in this vein: The Salt Lake Tribute, Sunstone Magazine, Dialogue Magazine and Signature Books. Voros has hit them all:

Take for instance this excerpt attributed to Voros from a symposium in 1992 entitled: "The Sanctity of Dissent.
"I believe that baptism washes away our sins, not our rights. I believe it is consistent with my faith as a Christian and a Mormon to write and speak my views, to disagree even with my leaders, and to state my dissent and my reasons therefor and, if I am ignored, to raise my voice, to express my distress or indignation, and even to resort to sarcasm and satire. I believe in this because I love Mormonism and want to see it flourish. I have made this statement because I wish to show that I have worked to resist spiritual abuse and to assist its victims not as an outsider, but as a believing Mormon."
source

Who does this sound like? Right out of an Oprah show, am I wrong? I hear Quo, I hear Helprin...

I believe the quote is from an article Published in Sunstone the previous year by Voros entitled: "Freedom of Speech in the Household of Faith," Sunstone 15 (Oct. 1991). Another great Oprah moment.

Later, 1993 (at the height of the Mormon dissent movement) Zoros hits these Another Kind of Abuse.? [Book review] Dialogue 26 (1) Spring 1993: 185-191.

In short, Voros is a liberal Democrat Mormon, which is absolutely an anomaly.

When Jews is News

viaRealClearPolitics - Articles on Oct 30, 2006
"Jewcentricity" is a word that sounds like itwas coined by an embittered anti-Semite. But it's actually theinspiration of Adam Garfinkle, a Jew, writing in The American Interestmagazine to call attention to a phenomenon that has roots inanti-Semitism and runs from the silly to the sublime: " . . . the idea,or the intimation, or the subconscious presumption . . . that Jews aresomehow necessarily to be found at the very center of global-historicalevents." "Jewcentricity" is most evident in the recycling of "TheProtocols of the Learned Elders of Zion," a fictitious textcommissioned by the czar's secret police for a Russian audience at theend of the 19th century, describing a fanciful cabal of Jews who planto take over the world. Some critics of the neoconservatives, some ofwhom are Jewish, cite the protocols, so called, in their accusationsthat Jews have hijacked American foreign policy. Others, critical ofIsrael, hyperventilate over the power of the "Israel lobby.""The Protocols" have naturally become a best seller in several Muslimcountries, including Turkey and Egypt, where they were turned into atelevision series. ("Semitic Sex in the City," however, it was not.)"The Protocols" were featured on the Iranian stands at last year's bookfair in Frankfurt "to expose the real visage of this Satanic-enemy,"along with an abridged edition of Henry Ford's literary thriller, "TheInternational Jew: The World's Foremost Problem" (which never made itto the screen). "The grip of the Jewish parasitic influence," assertsthe preface of the new edition, "has been growing stronger and strongerever since [Henry Ford's time]."

The Story Behind the Polls

viaRealClearPolitics - Articles on Oct 30, 2006
What's with the polls? In 2004, the electoratethat went to the polls or voted absentee was, according to the adjustedNEP exit poll, 37 percent Democratic and 37 percent Republican. Inparty identification, it was the most Republican electorate sinceGeorge Gallup conducted his first random sample poll in October 1935.But most recent national polls show Democrats with an advantage inparty identification in the vicinity of 5 percent to 12 percent. Partyidentification usually changes slowly. Historically, voters haveswitched from candidates of one party to candidates of the other morereadily than they have changed their party identification. Over time, big changes in party ID can and do occur. When I started in the pollingbusiness, in 1974, national party identification was almost 50 percentDemocratic and not much more than 25 percent Republican.

Just amazing:

Stephanopoulos: In the ad now running inMissouri, Jim Caviezel speaks in Aramaic. It means, "You betray me witha kiss." And his position, his point, is that actually even though downin Missouri they say the initiative is against cloning, it's actuallygoing to allow human cloning.

Fox: Well, I don't think that's true. You know, Icampaigned for Claire McCaskill. And so I have to qualify it by sayingI'm not qualified to speak on the page-to-page content of theinitiative. Although, I am quite sure that I'll agree with it inspirit, I don't know, I— On full disclosure, I haven't read it, and that's why I didn't put myself up for it distinctly.

In the ad, Fox makes two distinct accusations: he says that Talentis opposed to expanding stem cell research, and that Talent voted tocriminalise stem cell research. Both of these assertions aredemonstrably false - but I'm really not going to blame Foxanymore...he's just an empty suit; an actor parroting whatever thedirector tells him to say. He was told that Talent said such and such, and he repeated it, even though he couldn't possibly have checked itout. Now we see that he hasn't even read the ballot initiative whichtriggered this whole thing.

Fox knows nothing of what he is speaking - he is just yet another dupe of the left.

Hear that sound of rushing water...

That's the baptismal font filling up for K-Lo.

All kidding aside. Here's my first educational forum on Mormonism 101. I do this because I know there's gonna be a flurry of these questions over the next two years.

Lesson #1: Mormon "clergy"

K-Lo alluded to Mormon clergy in her post. While that's a semantically accurate way to refer to ecclesiastical authority in the Mormon Church, internally we never use the word clergy.

That is, of course, because the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has no paid clergy.

For example, my current Bishop (in Ashburn, VA) is a financial advisor, convert from Catholicism and father of two. My former Bishop was a senior CIA official (the kids would call him Batman sometimes - secret agent by day, Bishop by night).

Mitt Romney served as a Bishop in Mass. and a Stake President.

Just to get you an order of magnitude and perspective:
  • A Bishop presides over a "ward" of about 200-350 members
  • A Stake President (think tent stake) presides over 8-10 wards (about 2500 - 3000 members)
Also, all worthy males over the age of 12 may receive the Priesthood.

There are two Priesthoods in the Mormon Church: Aaronic and Melchizedek.

In the Aaronic Priesthood you can hold the office of Deacon, Teacher or Priest.
In the Melchizedek Priesthood you can hold the office of Elder or High Priest.

Leading the Church is the Prophet and President of the Church, the 12 Apostles and several quorums of Seventies:

I'll cover more detail at another time. Wiki does a decent job of describing it.

Mitt Romney Calls Out Media Bias

Gotta love it.

The Slippery Slope Strikes Again.

New Jersey falls victim to the anti-marriage forces

As a supporter of traditional marriage I have made many solid and logical arguments against the sanctioning of same-sex unions. One of these arguments is commonly known as the "slippery slope". The argument is essentially “death of marriage by a thousand cuts”. In other words, organizations are making strides to dismantle marriage in small but effective steps until one day you wake up, and its over. Thanks to the unfortunate actions of the New Jersey Supreme Court, that day is much nearer.

Opponents of traditional marriage claim the "slipper slope" argument is a ruse and an unsubstantiated non-argument. If there is one positive side of the Court's action yesterday (and there really is none) it would be that our argument has been proven beyond a doubt. The sequential logic that the Judges applied to support their findings make this all too clear.

Follow the timeline of events in their own words and make your own conclusion:

Taken from the majority opinion summary of the New Jersey Supreme Court:

  • "New Jersey's courts and its Legislature have been at the forefront of combating sexual orientation discrimination and advancing equality of treatment toward gays and lesbians."

  • "In 1992, through an amendment to the Law Against Discrimination (LAD), New Jersey became the fifth state to prohibit discrimination on the basis of "affectional or sexual orientation."

  • "In making sexual orientation a protected category, the Legislature committed New Jersey to the goal of eradicating discrimination against gays and lesbians."

  • "In 2004, the Legislature added "domestic partnership status" to the categories protected by the LAD."

  • "The Legislature, moreover, created the New Jersey Human Relations Council to promote educational programs aimed at reducing bias and bias-related acts, identifying sexual orientation as a protected category."

  • "Legislature passed the Domestic Partnership Act, which confers certain benefits and rights on same-sex partners who enter into a partnership under the Act."

  • "The Domestic Partnership Act has failed to bridge the inequality gap between committed same-sex couples and married opposite-sex couples."

  • "Significantly, the economic and financial inequities that are borne by same-sex domestic partners are also borne by their children."

  • "Further, even though same-sex couples are provided fewer benefits and rights by the Act, they are subject to more stringent requirements to enter into a domestic partnership than opposite-sex couples entering a marriage."

  • "Cast in that light, the issue is not about the transformation of the traditional definition of marriage, but about the unequal dispensation of benefits and privileges to one of two similarly situated classes of people."

  • "Our current laws concerning same-sex couples are more in line with those of Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut than the majority of other states."
Given there dialogue of events, the justices’ conclusion is not that surprising: "There is, on the one hand, no rational basis for giving gays and lesbians full civil rights as individuals while, on the other hand, giving them an incomplete set of rights when they enter into committed same-sex relationships."

Of course, the real irony of the statement that "the name" of the process should be left to the democratic process even though the decision was torn from constituents' hands.

The justices admit however that the real challenge will come on the Federal level. In “point 4” you can see that the justices really, really, want to change the law on a Federal level but just can't yet. "Despite the rich diversity of this State, the tolerance and goodness of this people, and the many recent advances made by gays and lesbians toward achieving social acceptance and equality under the law, the Court cannot find that the right same-sex marriage is a fundamental right under our constitution"

You can stop that from happening. You have every right to be upset but don't take it lying down.

Here are the actions you can take:

1) Write your representatives, call them and tell them you are outraged at this.

2) Get smart on the local issues. One great resource that was brought to our attention is "FamilyFacts.org"

3)Let me be absolutely clear about this. Electing a Democrat majority in the Senate and House will not deter the radial judges who are determined to legislate from the bench.

4) Donate to our cause and to others that can help make a difference.

Build your own GOTW campaign

Here's the deal. Your local Republican candidate needs your support to get out the vote. Statistics from the 2004 vote indicated that voters who were contacted by Republicans were more that twice as likely to know the person calling them from the phone bank. That is powerful!

Don't shy away. Go and volunteer at your local GOP headquarters. But even you can run your own phone bank!

Here's what you do.
  1. Gather together the names, emails and phone numbers of people you know will likely vote Republican (or even those who might be persuaded to do so).
  2. Next, put together an contact campaign with specific dates and actions (see below)
  3. Put it into action
  4. Then go volunteer at your local GOP phone bank
My own action table:

ActionDate
Send out intro email and issue #1 (Iraq)10/26
Send out issue # 2 (The Family) email10/28
Send out issue # 3 (The Pocketbook) email11/3
Send out GOTV Reminder11/3
Call to remind them to vote11/6
Send an email and call and make sure they vote11/7

Just to make things easier... here's an email I drafted for my friends and family:

Dear Friends and Family,

No doubt your mailbox, email and eardrums are filling up with political literature and pleadings. This is one of those

pleadings. But instead of coming from a faceless politician it's coming from someone you know (and hopefully trust).

The election is less than two weeks away and both parties and gearing up to get out the vote. The ballot you cast on

November 7th has deep implications for your family, your local community and the United States as well.

I'm contacting you as a friend to give you my two cents on the issues facing our country at this point in time. But first

you should know:

1) I may be contacting you over the next two weeks via phone and email to remind you to vote and
2) I hope that you will do the same with your extended circle of friends and family.

With that said, I want to point out with all seriousness that ANY vote for ANY Democrat is a vote for vulnerability. I hope you will join me in supporting the Republican candidate in your repective districts and states.

Yes, it is a serious charge. But when you look at the facts -- the election comes down to this: Republicans are serious about the war on Terror, the war on our Families and the war on our pocketbooks... Democrats are not. Read on!

ISSUES

Of course, one of the top issues of the day is the war in Iraq:

Democrats have three main complaints:

In this email I will tackle one point on Iraq:

* Democracts say that President Bush misled and lied us into war.

Democrats will frequently cite this quote from President Bush as a lie to push us to war:

“It is the duty of any president, in the final analysis, to defend this nation and dispel the security threat. Saddam Hussein

has brought military action upon himself by refusing for 12 years to comply with the mandates of the United Nations. The brave and capable men and women of our armed forces and those who are with us will quickly, I know, remove him once and for all as a threat to his neighbors, to the world, and to his own people, and I support their doing so."

Oh, wait... that wasn't President Bush... that was John Kerry in 2003. It was this quote that they use:

"There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein's regime is a serious danger, that he is a tyrant, and that his pursuit of lethal weapons of mass destruction cannot be tolerated. He must be disarmed."

Oh wait... that was Ted Kennedy.

You get the point. Both Senators signed a bill in 2002 granting the President to use force not just to get rid of WMDs but for 21 other reasons as well. As historian Victor Davis Hansen surmises:

A bewildered visitor from Mars would tell Washingtonians something like: "For twelve years you occupied Saddam's airspace, since he refused to abide by the peace accords and you were afraid that he would activate his WMD arsenal again against the Kurds or his neighbors. Now that he is gone and for the first time you can confirm that his weapons program is finally defunct, you are mad about this new precedent that you have established: That given the gravity of WMD arsenals, the onus is now on suspect rogue nations to prove that they do not have weapons of mass destruction, rather than for civilization to establish beyond a responsible doubt that they do?"

In short, the Senate Democrats had the relatively the same intelligence that President Bush had going to war. Today, however, they choose to ignore this fact and accuse the President of lying to get us to war.

Almost every intelligence agency in the world felt that Saddam had WMDs.

Regardless of how you feel on the matter... the truth is this: Democrats are not serious about the war on Terror.

I will address other points as our conversation continues.

If you do not with me to email you. Just let me know. I won't be offended.

Best to you and yours,
Justin

Wired News: Battle of the New Atheism

More on this article later. For now. Read and take heed.

Wired News: Battle of the New Atheism: "My friends, I must ask you an important question today: Where do you stand on God?

It's a question you may prefer not to be asked. But I'm afraid I have no choice. We find ourselves, this very autumn, three-and-a-half centuries after the intellectual martyrdom of Galileo, caught up in a struggle of ultimate importance, when each one of us must make a commitment. It is time to declare our position.

This is the challenge posed by the New Atheists. We are called upon, we lax agnostics, we noncommittal nonbelievers, we vague deists who would be embarrassed to defend antique absurdities like the Virgin Birth or the notion that Mary rose into heaven without dying, or any other blatant myth; we are called out, we fence-sitters, and told to help exorcise this debilitating curse: the curse of faith."

Live from the Capitol Club: It's Mitt Romney

Timing in comedy is everything. Timing in politics doubly so. If you can master both mediums... the world is yours.

Today the Commonwealth PAC hosted a luncheon with Mitt Romney at The Capitol Club in Washington, D.C. About 500 people turned out (donations in hand) including myself to hear the Mass. Governor give a few words.

The Capitol Club is a block south of Capitol Hill and shares a building with GOP headquarters (if these walls could talk!). I've been down there several times for briefings from the Republican pollsters strategies and leaders but this is the first time I paid for the opportunity.

Actually, I was glad to make the donation... it's a relatively small PAC with a decent contribution record. Romney is the key affiliate of the PAC.

The original plan was a sit down luncheon for about 100 people. There was no public notice of the event just word of mouth but that was enough to change the format to standing room only for 500 people.

After about a half-an-hour of carousing Ken Mehlman, chairman of the National Republican Committee, offered the introduction to Romney who spoke for about 15 minutes.

The crowd was full of dignitaries, former governors, congressmen, lobbyists, lawyers, staffers and interested crazy right-wing bloggers like myself. The event organizers told me afterward that 29 ambassadors were present. I won't say it was the who's who of Washington but it wasn't short of power.

"Be careful what you wish for..." Romney opened with good joke pointing out the huge and unexpected turnout for the event. The Governor was quick with the one-liners throughout the speech which flowed naturally from one topic to the other. From SLC olympic musings to a touching tribute to 9/11 Romney didn't miss a beat.

Romney's grasp of the modern day subjects was spot on. Discussing his trip to Afghanistan he recalled a conversation with his wife. She asked if he was adjusting to the time change. He responded: "The 11 and a half hours are not bad, it's the 800 years that are difficult." He pulled no punches pointing out this "challenging times" for the nation. He described with pretty good deftness the Jihadist threat to install a caliphate everywhere in the world.

Romney stayed afterward to take pictures and greet people until almost everyone had left.

At one point he declared: "I am not a full-time politician, this hasn't been my life." It may not have been his life, but I doubt it can remain that way, not if the crowd today has anything to say about it.

But hey... you didn't have to pay the money, you can be there too. See here:.

National Review 10th Anniversary Party

Well, a good time was had by all (except maybe my wife). Actually, kudos to Mrs. Hart who indulges me in my political whim - she actually enjoyed it.

It was an fun event - more of a mixer than a dinner - but the food was tremendous (served by the wandering waiters).

I wasn't quite sure who I was going to run into. But the first gentleman I saw after a quick bite was none other than THE man himself:

That's my wife Heather by the by. The Governor graciously remembered me on the spot although we haven't seen each other one on on for thirty years (more on that later :) ).

Next, I ran into the alway cordial Byron York:

Here was the general crowd:

Lastly a video of Romney giving an introduction at the party. Not very visible but very affable:

I never got to meet Jonah (who stayed in the "exclusive" bar area). To be fair I think he was pretty much commandeered by the exclusive crowd. Still, I met K-Lo (always gracious yet frantically jumping from one conversation to the next). Mario Loyola, Barbara Ledeen, Cliff May, John Miller, Derb, Laura Ingraham, David Frum who I mistook for John Podhoretz - (sorry David - or rather, John or rather...) and a gambit of other very friendly folk of my persuasion.

In short, a bit crowded, but glad I went.

Works and Days

Long live Victor Davis Hanson. This is excellent. Here's just an excerpt.

Works and Days: "The safety of millions of brave Iraqi reformers, the prestige of the United States and its military, the policy of fostering democratic reform in the Middle East, the end to the nexus between failed autocracies and scapegoating the West through terrorists; success of the Bush Administration; the effectiveness of the Democratic opposition; the divide between Europe and America; the attitude toward the United States of the Middle East autocracies; the reputation of the Islamic terrorists — all that will be adjudicated by the verdict in Iraq. Rarely have so many ideologies, so much politics, so many reputations been predicated on just a few thousand American combat soldiers and their Iraq allies."

Election Tool #2: Bush Lied

Of course, the biggest diatribe ever spun is that President Bush lied about the war in Iraq... that he made up the WMD notion to invade Iraq for oil and that we was the lone man with a yarn about how evil and threatening Saddam was.
